So your data warehouse is out of gas? Your data marts never really did what they were meant to do, and management is using words like "sunsetting" when the ODS is mentioned in meetings. To add insult to injury, your BI vendor just told you that your entire BI architecture represents "decade-old thinking." Sure, they want to sell you an upgrade, but still—ouch. It remains your sacred duty (and, by the way, ours) to make sure that your company leverages BI to the hilt. And not to put too fine a point on it, but if your technology is considered passé, then so might you be.
Baseline Consulting doesn’t advocate platform migrations for their own sake. There are plenty of ways to breathe new life into a moribund data warehouse platform or BI tool suite. (To wit, we recently completed an engagement with a major retailer in which we nixed a full-blown DBMS migration in favor of a new Enterprise Information Integration effort that availed federated query functionality across a number of disparate business applications.)
But there might come a time when migrating to a new product makes sense from a cost, staff, or performance standpoint. We’ve benchmarked competitive products, justified migration efforts based on business requirements and total cost of ownership calculations, and implemented new hardware and software solutions that have driven higher ROI.
Baseline has not only migrated large volumes of data across platforms for our clients, we’ve designed migration plans to ensure optimal long-term system performance. Our platform migration projects are functionally-oriented. We look at operational data access and reporting needs, evaluate the scope and number of data sources, and assess the processing and accessibility limitations of the operational environment. We’ll diagnose workload challenges, understand current processing and production management practices, and examine downstream reports and queries.
The result of these engagements is a set of architectural recommendations that outline your moving-forward choices and suggest tools and resources necessary to get you there in a cost-effective and nimble way. We’ll get your data warehouse—and by extension, your team—out of the darkness and back into the sunshine.
