When historians get around to 1991, it’s likely they will say it was the year that consulting got its legs underneath it. It was also the year that Evan Levy and Jill Dyche started Baseline Consulting. Evan and Jill had worked in various professional services organizations and thought they could build a consulting firm that combined a stellar team of hand-picked experts with specialized approaches and a healthy company culture. And have fun doing it.
Our goal was always to grow slowly, deliberately, organically and profitably. We turned down offers of outside investment. We wanted to hire good people on our own terms and avoid advice from people who dressed better than us who knew less than us about where the market was headed. It’s an approach that’s served us well.
Some key Baseline milestones include:
-
1997: Baseline launched business advisory consulting to complement our leadership in IT implementation and integration. This let us offer industry-specific expertise and executive-level thought leadership to our clients.
-
2000: Addison Wesley published Baseline partner Jill Dyche’s first book, e-Data, which put Baseline on the map as one of the thought leaders in enterprise data deployment.
-
2001: We formed parent company Baseline Holdings to manage the various consulting practices, research activities, and vendor and investor advisory services.
-
2002: The CRM Handbook became the bestseller on the topic of Customer Relationship Management.
- 2006: Evan and Jill wrote Customer Data Integration. It was the first book to market on the topic of data integration and master data management (MDM). Some say it’s the best.
-
2007: Evan and Jill recruited an executive team of shining stars. They run the company as if it’s their own and are the best at what they do.
Today, industry analysts, vendors, and executives recognize and recommend Baseline as the go-to firm for business and IT consulting work. Baseline is in the vanguard of services firms for business intelligence, MDM, and data governance, offering skills in a range of industries, technologies, and methodologies. We have retained our deliberate growth strategy and our fun culture. History will show that it was the right way to build a consulting firm.
